Don’t Be Myth-led!

Myths (approximate)Erindale Bible Chapel, Mississauga, Ontario

A series of messages by Pastor Peter McKnight designed to explore (and explode!) some of the most common misconceptions about life.

We all live with certain assumptions about life that simply aren’t true—they are myths. These myths cause us to have false illusions about ourselves, about other people, and even about God. We need to replace these myths with a clear Biblical perspective in order to live life as God meant us to.

What are some of these myths?

Myth #1 - “I would never do something like that” (May 27)

Although I have some minor flaws and defects, I am basically a good person. I’m not really capable of committing serious sins. Actually, God is rather fortunate to have me on His side.

Myth #2 - “God is predictable” (June 3)

If I know God well enough, believe the promises of Scripture fervently enough, and pray hard enough, I can pretty much figure out what God will or will not do in my life.

Myth #3 - “The people closest to me will never let me down” (June 24)

Sin is a serious problem only in people who are really wicked. None of my friends or family fall into that category. Therefore, the important people in my life will never disappoint or hurt me.

Myth #4 - “Somewhere out there is ‘the good life’…if only I could find it.” (July 8)

It is possible to find a lifestyle of total peace and personal security in this world. A life of tranquility without conflict is an achievable goal.

Myth #5 - “Pain isn’t God’s will for me” (July 15)

God would never want me to suffer. God is good, therefore His will could not possibly include anything that causes me pain. If I have pain in my life, it’s because I have somehow fallen short of his will.
